Charles Eyler is a main character in Hello Charlotte Episode Three and Heaven's Gate.

It is revealed at the end of the game that Charles is actually C and the mysterious man who appears in the maze of Hello Charlotte Episode One. In addition, he is also the Umbrella Man at some points during the games.

End of spoilers.

Appearance[]

Charles has short, straight black hair and yellow eyes. He wears a white turtleneck underneath a V-necked black sweater and white pants. Charles also wears black gloves in order to avoid touching things directly. When breaking down, Charles clothes are often depicted as more liquified and black, presumably representing ink. Because these incidents occur in the False Realm, it is unknown if this depiction is meant to be literal or metaphorical.

For the most part, Charles looks the same in Heaven's Gate, although he does wear more outfits. When in middle school he has acne, but this fades due to Anri's help. He also doesn't wear gloves very often, exposing his hands that are blistered after his compulsive handwashing.

Personality[]

Charles tends to be a very distant individual who lives in his own head for the most of the time, and talks to the only two people he has become close with. He tries to connects to others through his writing and art, which manifests itself in how the House functions. Charles is unable to physically connect with others due to his belief that the entire world is contaminated with parasites, which manifests visually by how all people except Vincent have appeared distorted at least once.

Alhtough he is very thoughtful and logical, Charles often has difficulty understanding other people's perspectives. This is especially evident when he offers to commit suicide with Anri and is taken aback by her upset reaction.

He tends to be very organized and methodical, however many parts of himself are things he lacks control over. The foremost of these being Scarlett, who appears as a distorted form of the sister he thinks should have been born instead of him. Scarlett is also very abusive towards Charles, likely representing his self-hatred for being a burden to his mother. Charles' devotion towards his mother is so strong that he says that he will live no longer than she does, which eventually comes true when he commits suicide shortly after she dies.

Story[]

Background[]

Before being born, his father and mother had split apart. Despite this, his father chose to allow Charles to be born, while decided to force Lilith to get an abortion and kill Scarlett Eyler. Lilith was still full of energy until eventually suffering from a mental breakdown, becoming obsessed with Scarlett and being unable to see Charles as anyone but Scarlett. This likely caused Charles to begin to manifest his tulpa, Scarlett Eyler.

In his drawer it is shown that he has intrusive thoughts and is suspected to have Autism Spectrum Disorder (listed as Asperger's syndrome in game), however, he is only prescribed medication from his psychotic episodes. A wallet of his absent father's is the only stable source of income he and his mother have left.

Hello Charlotte 1[]

Charles has a very small part to play in Hello Charlotte 1. Here, he takes on the form of C wearing an Executioner Mask. He goes to Charlotte when she stays behind in the maze, and possesses Charlotte's body in order to kill White Freya, as clearly indicated by the yellowing of her eyes once he possesses her. Charles also whispers a secret to her in order to convince her to allow him to possess her.

In Hello Charlotte 3, it is revealed that he reminded Charlotte that she was originally Scarlett.

End of spoilers.

Hello Charlotte 2[]

Although his sprite is in the game files, Charles himself does not appear in this game.

Although Charles himself does not appear in Hello Charlotte 2, he does state that he used a Vincent vessel in order to pose as C in order to observe Charlotte/Scarlett.

End of spoilers.

Hello Charlotte 3[]

True Realm[]

Charles is first introduced to the player after Scarlett attacks Q84 in the hallway and linqs with her. The narration in the beginning of this portion is from Charles, and describes how the world is filled with parasites that infiltrate one's mind and personality, and reproduce until everyone has been infected. As he begins to go back into reality, we see that he and Anri are watching a girl get bullied so that they can gather blackmail on the bullies. Anri asks him if they can find a teacher to get help, but Charles says that it's unlikely any teachers are left behind. The two run away from the school, afraid of being targets of the bullies themselves.

Charles recounts how he and Anri met. Anri had been locked in the boy's changing room and Charles had given her his track pants to help her. She bullied him for a year until she discovered his drawings and decided to become friends with him.

The next time we see Charles, he is in his room. A photo on his window shows a him and his cat, who was presumably killed by Scarlett Eyler. Anri texts him, annoyed that he is ignoring her. She complains that she feels like she's cosplaying when he uses his Charlotte profile picture, but he ignores her saying that others would kill to have matching icons with C.[3] Anri and Charles talk about his fiction, which Anri teases him for being a self-insert storyline. He responds that he has 900 kudos[4] on his story. He gets a text from C and asks if the two can discuss philosophy. C politely refuses as he is too busy writing a script for his new story. C compliments Charles on his drawings before leaving.

Charles begins to have a delusion of Scarlett Eyler appearing in front of him, and recalls how she regular punishes Charles for failing to be perfect. He drinks 10 pills in order to keep her away, and she disappears.

After this incident, Charles decides to check on his mother. She is lying in bed with only her hair showing, and Charles mentions thathe has taken up freelance work in order to make extra money. His mother is regretful that she is so unenergetic, and he tries to comfort her. As he leaves she calls him a good girl, and Charles describes that his mother no longer sees him, but Scarlett Eyler.

646 days before the Trial, Anri tells Charles that the two will be going on a date to a new thriller. Anri enjoys it to her surprise, and Charles teases her for enjoying it merely for its romance subplot. She asks to go to a popular cafe, which he accepts despite feeling like the only reason she is doing this is in order to brag to her friends about it later. They eat their parfaits and Charles enjoys their time together while thinking that they will eventually throw each other away after high school.

Upon returning home, he has another delusion of Scarlett and realizes that he no longer has pills left. She criticizes his story where no characters have free will. A message from C pops up, and Charles asks Scarlett to give him 5 minutes to talk. C tells Charles that he will be committing suicide, and tells him that he is willing to be with him when he dies. Scarlett turns off the computer before Charles can finish his conversation and threatens to kill Charles if he doesn't follow her orders. Charles agrees, only so that he can see C before he dies.

After studying, Charles checks up on Mother. Her pills are gone as well, and she calls him a "good girl" once again.

Charles finally meets C 625 days before the Trial, and is relieved that C is not distorted. He learns that C's real name is Vincent, and apologizes that rather than being a cute girl, he was instead a boy. Vincent doesn't care, and explains his universe birth theory of souls becoming a new universe upon death. He asks Charles what he would do if he became a god, and Charles thinks about cleansins their disease-stricken world, but eventually decides that he'd rather someone else be a creator. This eventually results in him becoming an Observer in his own world with Charlotte as the main character.

Taking off his glove for the first and only time in this game, he holds Vincent's hand as they sit on the building's ledge. He tells Vincent that they'll see each other in the Heavenly Kingdom, and thinks about how Vincent doesn't have to become a god of a new world when he's the god of Charles' world already. Before Charles can try and stop Vincent, Vincent lets go of his hand and falls. As Charles breaks down on the rooftop, Scarlett criticizes Charles and expresses gladness at Vincent's death. Charles calls an ambulance and runs far away.

At home after the suicide, Scarlett continues to harass Charles while he thinks about Vincent's death. He begs Scarlett to leave as he cries. The story of The Quiet God is then narrated to the audience, presumably a story written by Charles about Vincent.

531 days before the Trial, Anri and Charles are hanging out in his house. Anri tells him that her family is planning on moving away, and Charles suggests that they run away together. She rents a hotel.

At the hotel Charles offers Anri a pack of pills so that they can 'escape' and commit suicide. Enraged by this offer, Anri hits him until they fall on the floor. As Anri cries Charles realizes that she lied about not caring and truly wants him to live. In order to try and calm him down, she tells him to repeat "It's not my fault," and they do for a long time until they calm down, and Charles briefly wonders if Anri does this when she's alone. Anri kisses Charles to which he feels immense disgust to such a degree that she temporarily appears distorted.

Charles talks to Anri about missing Vincent and regrets that he had never finished the Aether Almanac. Anri breaks up with him and they hug, eventually parting ways. They try to keep in contact when she moves away, but a year and a half later, they stop talking altogether.

At this point, Mother dies and appears distorted to Charles, causing a complete breakdown in Charles where the entire world is mutated and disgusting. Only Vincent remains clean, and Charles wonders how to become clean like Vincent, coming to the conclusion the only way to become clean and ascend is to commit suicide.

0 days until the Trial, Charles goes to the ocean and wonders if the entire ocean would be enough to "wash all the ink" off of him, likely a reference to the Ink Princess. He recalls being unable to fulfill any of his desires or succeed in any way, and decides he doesn't want to become a protagonist when someone like Charlotte would be more fitting. Charles says that his story was about giving up as Scarlett tries to bully him out of committing suicide. As he sinks into the water, she grows quieter until Charles dies.

False Realm[]

Charles does not appear in the Prologue in the False Realm, except in his Vincent vessel as C. He is also not seen for the majority of Episode Three, but has his poems shown in the Language World.

During the true Episode 3, Charles revives Q84 into a defective Charlotte vessel. She becomes immensely upset at this selfish decision of his, but eventually decides to comply with his request for emotional support when she realizes that it's serious. As they go towards their final destination, Charles tells Charlotte that his previous Vincent vessel committed suicide just as all the others have. She tells him they should bury it later.

In Father's room Charles explains that Scarlett became Charlotte, and her mind crumbled under the influence of Mother. Charles gave her a yellow ribbon as Umbrella Man and also assisted her in the TV World. Attempting to trigger her memories, he told her that he'd help her kill Wiltshire again, causing her to become immensely suicidal. She and the Oracle of the TV World created a world made entirely out of Scarlett's soul data, which Charles visited as C in Episode 2. Despite his fear of reuniting with Scarlett, he realized that she was different than she used to be after losing her memories of the past. She was even unable to recall one of his old stories. Charles thought tht he might be able to get revenge and hurt her, but she was kind when Scarlett would've been cruel, so Charles couldn't hurt or help her.

Q84 asks who the "Umbrella Man" could've been if Charles had been C while in Charlotte's world when Father enters the room. Umbrella Man offers to set Charlotte free by destroying the television, effectively killing her. Charles is outraged at her idea and asks if they could transfer her into another vessel, but Umbrella Man states that no single could contain her anymore. Q84 is annoyed with Charles' desire to save Scarlett, but Charles ignores this by saying that he forgave Scarlett. In the end, the choice to switch the channel and ignore the problem is left up to the Puppeteer.

HAPPY E&%NdD: Chihdj78UJlhood's E8&nd[]

The channel is switched. Q84 and Charles watch a new Charlotte happily eat chips. Suddenly upset by this image, Charlotte switches the channel until Charles stops her. They are both frustrated at their inability to solve their problems, and Charles mourns the fact that he was born rather than Scarlett. Charlotte makes the decision to revive the White Society in order to revive Scarlett, effectively creating Pythias out of them, making the most selfish decision possible.

True End: Goodbye, Charlotte[]

Q84 decides to destroy the television rather than Charles, saying that she doesn't want Charles to bear the burden of killing his sister.

Q84 and Charles are next seen burying Vincent in a seeimingly bottomless pit under a black sun. Charles laments that he was only able to see Vincent as someone who committed suicide, but couldn't change him without turning him into someone brainwashed and happy. Finally able to accept that Vincent is gone, he says goodbye.

Charles and Q84 goes to mother next, Charles with Ice-9 in hand. As he stands near Mother, he explains that he does not believe the House to be made purely for entertainment as V19 believed, but instead a way to connect with others through art. His House demanded an appealing protagonist because he felt nobody else would both staying without one. Charles comes to term with the loss of his loved ones, and decides to let go of his mother as well. He comforts her and reminds her that she gave birth to many wonderful children as he injects her with the Ice-9, killing her. He breaks down, and Q84 comforts him as he has a panic attack.

The afterword is the only time Charles speaks directly to the Puppeteer. He thanks the player for staying despite the fact it was not the ending they likely would have wanted, and speaks through the others characters, saying that it was a disappointing world where choices didn't matter. Despite all of these flaws, he enjoys the fact that he and the Puppeteer were able to have a conversation, and that he was able to let go of his regrets through his story. The screen shifts, presumably due to Charles' influence, and allows Charlotte to thank the player one last time.

"I want you to live," Charles says to Vincent, and history repeats.

Diary[]

The Heaven's Gate Diary takes place from Anri's perspective in Episode Three True Realm, and Charles features briefly inside of it. Anri comes into contact with Charles Eyler, and finds him odd. She becomes interested in him because she feels that he too is filled with maggots.

They become friends, and start dating on a whim. Anri eventually forces Charles to go to a doctor, and Charles fears that if he reveals Scarlett to a doctor she will throw his cat out of a window. Trying to comfort Anri, she squeezes his hand.

After taking pills, Charles becomes more normal and talks about things that he enjoys. Anri is pleased with this development. Later, she lies to a group chat that she and Eyler have had sex. Even when she tells him about this, Charles is unbothered because he does not feel insulted by it after C explained how to feel unbothered by things. Anri recognizes how much this C has influenced him.

Anri moves away from Charles and tries to stay in contact with him. Scarlett is possessing him more frequently at this point, even telling Anri to stop contacting Charles.
