Indulgences are 4 items that can be obtained in tomorrow won't come for those without ██████. Using each one will display a different memory of Ori's.
General[]
Indulgences are each found at a Main Hallway's Indulgence machine. There are slight variations between each Indulgence machine, such as the fact that one dispenses a PO-KA or an Indulgence, and the last one dispenses a completely free Indulgence. Each Indulgence will allow a specific shape of sin to be forgiven.
This reflects the way Catholic Indulgences used to function, where money was used to "reduce the amount of punishment one has to undergo for sins." [1] EULI is used in real money's stead, but EULI appears to be this universe's form of currency.
Finding and using all four Indulgences before going through the doors at the final main hallway will allow the Noise ending to be unlocked as Ori will remember much of his life.
Triangular[]
The first Indulgence is the Triangular Indulgence, which can be found in the first main hallway. Ori can receive this Indulgence after interacting with the Indulgence machine twice while Rem is in the party, and details how Ori forgot his sister's face.
Indulgence: Triangular[]
- For as long as I can remember, there were always the two of us.
- Me and her.
- Me and my sister.
- Ori and Mari.
- Even after I became a Chorister and she left to the Monastery, I still hear her voice in my head.
- But I no longer remember her face.
- In its place is a face that belongs to somebody else.
Square[]
Indulgence: Square is the second Indulgence that Ori can receive, and is found in the second main area's Indulgence Machine. He must find the EULI necessary to purchase this Indulgence at the [Sunday Class Lesson: Barriers] in the right room in the top body bag. This Indulgence shows Ori's memories of him and his sister Mari playing in the Forest, and also hints at the fact Ori would like to become friends with an otherwordly being.
Indulgence: Square[]
- We'd often wander into the Forest at night, without our parents knowing.
- We liked being in the Dark.
- During the day, all of us were taught the same thing, over and over.
- "If you want to stay in the Light, you ought to be honest."
- "All the good children always stay transparent."
- "Only then will you become Enlightened."
- But during the night, we were free to do anything we wanted.
- Because the Forest kept all our secrets.
- All we knew Was the warmth of our joined hands.
- And it was all that mattered.
- We even came up with our own game.
- Mari would come up with a story, and I would act it out.
- "You turned left and froze: there was something in the bushes," she would narrate.
- "Your gaze was met with many eyes staring right at you in the dark."
- "Come out, Exform!" I'd name it right on the spot.
- "The Exform stays hidden." Mari played along. "You can feel your thoughts spherify."
- "But you have nothing to fear: You have the Power of Friendship on your side!"
- "You get closer, and..."
- "Will you be my friend?", I asked.
- Mari let out an exasperated sigh.
- "Ori! You're supposed to fight it!"
- "But Mari. Didn't you say I have the power of friendship?"
- "That's a figure of speech, Ori. You never understand things like these."
- "Mari. You need to tell me these things directly."
- "Besides..."
- "I really want to know what it's like."
- "Even though it's dangerous?"
- "What if it's just really, really afraid?"
- "Afraid of what?"
Circular[]
The Circular Indulgence is found in the third main hallway, and is obtained using EULI found at the [Sunday Class Lesson: Light]. Ori remembers how Mari used to act and how she once stated she was an alien. This Indulgence machine also dispenses a PO-KA, but will not allow Ori to obtain an Indulgence after selecting a PO-KA.
Indulgence: Circular[]
- Many knew her as a relaxed person.
- She always seemed like she was in a light reverie, unconcerned with earthly matters.
- But I knew.
- How she'd erratically look in each and every mirror she'd find.
- How her notebooks would be filled with drawings of herself.
- How she cried in the bathroom, her sobs drowned out by the flowing water.
- As if she needed constant confirmation she existed.
- As if she was worried she looked "off".
- As if she needed practice to stay "herself".
- I knew.
- One day, she looked in a mirror and said, "This body is no longer your sister's."
- "She can no longer write her Narrative."
- "Therefore, she has no history."
- "Therefore, she is missing."
- "Then, who are you?" I asked, puzzled.
- "I am an alien."
- I never understood what she meant by those words.
- The next day, Mari painted her nails violet.
Cross[]
The last Indulgence is the Cross Indulgence. It shows how Ori applied for the Choir, and how Mari took him back into the Forest to play their games. At one point, she tells him that he must pretend to be forgetful, and will continue to guide him at the Monastery. It is obtained from the last Main Hallway, and is given out for free. Rem will not take one, as he says he has no need for such things.
Indulgence: Cross[]
- It was the day I applied for The Choir.
- Everyone was happy for me.
- Except Mari.
- She woke me up late at night, and dragged me out of bed.
- Back into the Forest.
- It was the first game we had played in five years.
- Ever since she proclaimed herself an alien, we never played together again.
- Yet, there she was, narrating my journey like nothing had happened.
- "You wandered too far into the Forest."
- "But there's no turning back now."
- "You'll have to face it on your own."
- "You see The Exform, illuminated by faint moonlight."
- Then, Mari suddenly stopped.
- "Mari?"
- "Listen, Ori."
- "You have to remember what I'm about to say."
- With those words, she cupped my face in her hands.
- "Don't let anyone know you're sane."
- "Make everyone think you're ignorant." "Make them think you're forgetful."
- "Make them think you're unable to think on your own."
- "This way, no one will every hurt you."
- "So I just have to pretend?"
- "Yes. Yes. It's just like playing with me, right?"
- "I will be the Narrator, and you'll be the Hero."
- "But Mari. You won't always here for me."
- "I'll join the Monastery," Mari said in a whisper. "Then you'll be able to hear my voice anytime."
- "At first, it'll be hard. But I'll always be here to guide you."
- "Promise me, Ori."
