Summary[]

Orifiel wakes up in the Hotel. His purpose? To find the source of the Dithyrambs. This forgetful boy travels through the Hotel with Remiel in order to find the truth that lies beyond the veil, and how his memories of his sister and a mysterious Conductor affect his actions.

Story[]

The game first starts with a short excerpt from New Order, Infini 2:31. While not much is known about this orgnization, it is likely that they have some degree of connection with The Choir based on the religious tones of the section.

Orifiel, better known as Ori, is first seen waking up in a bathtub, praying that "tomorrow would never come." He goes to look for his Rosary so that he doesn't "forget again." When interacting with the refridgerator, Ori finds a welcome message from the hotel staff as well as a cup of Questionable Snacks. Eating these snacks results in Ori acquiring an Empty Cup. A purple smear of lavender blood is seen leading to the bedroom where a dead body lies. Ori does not substantially interact with it until he finds his Rosary near the bed.

He finds his Rosary charged at 100% and can now pray at any time using the "R key". Praying allows Ori to get hints, find out he is at the Hotel, and discover his purpose of finding "the source of the Dithyrambs." Searching the body in the bedroom now yields a Card Holder. This Card Holder, when interacted with, uncovers an ID card that identifies the body on the bedroom floor as Remiel with Student ID: AR 2647-815. Ori notes that he didn't know Students were still around these days upon finding it.

After finding out who Remiel is, Ori can now enter the first main hallway. In the center, a purple "veil" blocks Ori, saying that "Tomorrow won't come for those without a friend." An Indulgence Machine can be found as well, offering an Indulgence for 5 EULI. EULI is this game's form of currency.

The bottom left room has a "Do not disturb" sign, rendering it unable to access. The top left room has an old Remiel corpse in a bathtub full of blood, interacting with this bathtub will uncover a Key Card. A Razor Blade is found in this bathroom as well. Within the bedroom of this room is another Orifiel, however he is unresponsive.

The top left room is accessed with the aforementioned Key Card, and contains a Card Pack. It is also revealed through the note on the desk that this is Remiel's room. Interacting with the door of the bottom left room allows Ori to hear someone crying inside of the room, and if he has already interacted with the veil, he knocks (a teaching from the Conductor). He asks the crying person to help him, as he needs a "friend" to pass through the veil. A loud noise is heard, and Ori decides to take more drastic measures to get in by using violet blood in a sacred ritual.

Using the corpse in his room, Ori uses the Empty Cup and the Razor Blade to acquire a Cup of Blood. He goes back to the locked door and draws a symbol, allowing him entry into the previous inaccessible room. This room too, is Remiel's room, and Ori uses the remaining blood to access the bathroom, reacquiring the Empty Cup. He finds Remiel shuddering and holding free hygienic products. Ori tells Rem that even if there are rooms where he died, there must have been rooms where he lived, but Rem doesn't understand.

Ori asks for Rem's help, which Rem only agrees to on the condition that Ori bring him all of the hygienic products in the hotel. Ori tells his Rosary to record his newfound quest. Rem reluctantly joins Ori, and the two talk in the hallway. Rem says that he was unable to get all the freebies because the smell was so bad, but Ori merely thinks that it smelled of lavender. Rem makes a dark expression as a result.

Ori can make Rem rooibos tea in the top right room by interacting with the kettle, which he drinks with a sour face. Rem refuses to go to the top left room, likely due to the smell of his corpse in the bathtub. In addition, Ori's body that had been there moments ago has mysteriously vanished. Rem also refuses to go into the room Ori woke up in, likely for the same reason. Ori grabs the bottles and leaves.

Interacting with the Indulgence Machine in the Main Hallway twice results in Rem buying Ori an Indulgence to Ori's delight. The Triangular Indulgence is obtained, which details the story of Ori and Mari. The two were siblings, and Ori became a Chorister while she went to the Monastery. Ori however, can no longer remember her face, saying her face belongs to somebody else.

After getting all of the hygienic products and interacting with the Veil, Ori and Rem will talk. Ori will try to ask his Rosary why Rem has to follow him, angering Rem. This confrontation leads to Ori pulling Rem through the Veil. Rem becomes more infuriated with Ori for dragging him there against his will.

The new Veil says that "Tomorrow won't come for those without faith." Ori wonders how he should get that, while Rem says that faith should be something one has naturally. Ori disagrees, believing faith is taught by others. Rem leaves, walking through the Veil on his own and leaving Ori to figure out his way through. A Card Pack can be found in this Main Hallway as well as an Indulgence Machine.

The left room begins [[[Sunday Class Lessons|[Sunday Class Lesson: Patterns]]]. Celestials affect the behavior of their hosts, and Ori is asked to remember its movements and choose the right pattern at the end of the round due to this feature. Ori remarks at how familiar this place feels. In order, the patterns are 3, 1, and 3. Failing at any of these answers will lead to the "There was nothing you could do." Ending.

After completing this Sunday Class Lesson, Ori will remember a portion of his life from before he entered the Hotel. During one of Open Doors days in Church, Ori went to look at a Purification Ceremony performed by the Conductor. The Conductor describes how Celestials are polluted and deceitful, and that those polluted by them are no longer human. He also explains the Dithyrambs here, and how they are the noise that Celestials pollute their victims minds with in order to enslave them. In front of him is a weakened Celestial, and he performs the final Purification ritual. Ori is then blinded by violet, implying some degree of blood.

The right room contains [Sunday Class Lesson: Barriers]. Celestials create mental barriers inside a host's mind in order to alter their Narrative, according to the lesson, and Ori must destroy the barrier within 120 seconds. If he does not, he will become polluted himself. There are various objects here, and a few are required in order to pass through this challenge safely. If he does not succeed, the "There was nothing you could do." Ending is triggered.

Turning on the light switch allows Ori to enter the room on the right. A Card Pack can be found here, as well as as Matches when inspecting the second from the top body bag. Optional EULI can be found in the top body bag, which is required for the Noise ending. Switching the lamp off in the main room will cause something to shift, and the halo outfit can be put on.

The left room contains an abstract being holding Rem in its clutches, which Ori can set on fire using the matches. Rem will disappear after burning it, and a stack of papers will appear in the main room afterwords. This essay, if read, will be revealed to have been written by Remiel. He describes how humanity can no longer dream, and as a result have turned to Celestials in order to find faith and to forget their disillusionment. Ori wonders if Rem really wrote this, and burns the papers in the name of Conductor in order to let silence reign.

Ori is able to pass through the barrier after completing both lessons, having gained his faith in one form or another. He finds Rem in front of the next barrier, who unexcitedly congratulates Ori. Interacting with Rem again causes him to tell Ori that the new veil requires a Rosary in order to pass through it. Ori decides to look for a Rosary for Rem, who follows Ori at a one-meter distance.

The Indulgence machine in this area gives the option of choosing a PO-KA or an Indulgence at the cost of some EULI. PO-KA, short for Poem Kaleidoscope, is a poem generator that generates specialized poems for a person once a month. Ori says that it sounds like a scam, but wants to get one regardless.

End of spoilers.

Themes[]

From etherane on Themes in TWC:
"The definitions of religion and philosophy in this story are switched, in a way.

Some, like Remiel and Mari, seek salvation by depending on higher beings (Celestials), whereas many, similar to Orifiel, seek salvation by depending on themselves alone (and inevitably, on the tools they create).

Paradoxically, The Choir uses religious terminology and depends on rather simplistic methods to achieve the feeling of control, whereas the chaotic Forest, where many wander on their own, symbolizes creativity and stands for freedom of thought.

Both human sides ultimately have the same wish, but neither take into account the third side - the Other, non-human entities that co-exist with them.

Among this cacophony, current Conductor's goals remain in the dark. [2]

Memories[]

There are many memories found throughout the game, many seem to come from an unknown narrator, and it is difficult to discern exactly what they are referring to.

Memory after Patterns Lesson[]

  • It was sunny on Sunday.
  • During one of Open Doors days in Church, we stood behind the glass, trying to get a better look at the Purification.
  • In the midst of it was Conductor himself.
  • "There's one thing you should know about Celestials."
  • "And that thing is: Celestials are deceitful", Conductor proclaims, his voice loud and piercing.
  • "Those polluted by them may appear human, but they're anything but."
  • "They exist as tiny particles in the air, and may assume a solid form at will."
  • "Once they enter your body, they'll fill your mind with noise - the Dithyrambs - and enslave you."
  • "But, have no fear."
  • "The Celestial I have here had been already weakened."
  • "All that's left is the final purification ritual."
  • "Only then this child will be freed."
  • As Conductor spoke, he rose his heavy hand above the Polluted.
  • "Remember."
  • "A man is a slave to no one."
  • And then I was blinded by violet.

  • "All we can do is weaken their conscious minds."
  • "A Celestial's mind is like a cacophony of musical instruments."
  • "As long as they keep playing, it stays active."
  • "As long as they keep playing, the noise in your head won't go away."
  • "You have to make it quiet."
  • "Destroy all the barriers they have set up inside their host's mind."
  • "That way, they'll become harmless."
